How the New Testament emerged from the life of the early Church
The video addresses a common Western misconception that the Bible appeared as a complete book, similar to the Quran. When Paul and Christ refer to scripture, they mean the Hebrew scriptures, because the New Testament writings did not yet exist. The gospel accounts were written twenty to thirty years after the events they describe.
During those decades Christians worshiped, partook of the body and blood of Christ, and were formed by the Hebrew scriptures. The texts of the New Testament were produced by the church community; scripture emerged from the life of the church, not the church from scripture. Chapter and verse divisions were added much later.
