Saints Galaktion and Episteme: Married Ascetics Martyred in Emesa

The post recounts the lives of Saint Galaktion and Saint Episteme, commemorated on November 5. Galaktion was born in Emesa to wealthy pagan parents, Cleitophon and Leucippe, who had been childless until a Christian monk named Onuphrius visited, prayed for them, and foretold a son if they embraced the faith. After their baptism, they raised Galaktion in piety. Though drawn to monasticism, Galaktion obeyed his parents and became betrothed to a pagan woman, Episteme.

He instructed her in Christianity, leading to her baptism, and they agreed to preserve their virginity. They withdrew to Mount Publion, entering separate monastic houses, Galaktion to a men's monastery, Episteme to a women's convent, and lived years of prayer and strict asceticism without seeing each other. During the persecution under Emperor Decius, around 250-253 AD, the governor Ursus arrested both after they were betrayed as Christians.

Before her arrest, Episteme experienced a prophetic vision of their summons to a heavenly kingdom. When Galaktion was whipped, Episteme wept openly, prompting the authorities to arrest and whip her as well. The pagans subjected both to severe tortures: piercing their nails with reeds, cutting off their hands and feet, cutting out their tongues, and finally beheading them.
