Saint Loukianos of Antioch: scholar, martyr, living altar

The post commemorates Saint Loukianos (Lucian), Priest of Antioch, whose feast falls on October 15. Born around 240 in Samosata, Syria, he was orphaned at twelve, gave his inheritance to the poor, and pursued an ascetic life. He studied Scripture under the confessor Macarius in Edessa and was ordained a presbyter in Antioch. There he founded a theological school that reshaped Christian scholarship and spent years correcting the Greek Septuagint and New Testament, producing a text later prized by Saint Jerome.

During the persecutions of Diocletian and Maximinus, Loukianos was arrested and taken to Nicomedia, where he endured floggings and torture for nine years. He refused food offered to idols, nearly starving while strengthening fellow prisoners. On the Feast of Theophany, chained to a floor strewn with pottery shards and lacking an altar, he celebrated the Eucharist on his own chest so that visiting Christians could receive Communion.

The next day, when guards came, he declared "I am a Christian" three times and died in 312.
