Martyrdom of Trophimus, Sabbatius, and Dorymedon in Antioch and Phrygia

Martyrdom of Trophimus, Sabbatius, and Dorymedon in Antioch and Phrygia

During the reign of Emperor Probus, Saints Trophimus and Sabbatius traveled to Antioch. At that time, pagans were holding a feast and sacrifice to Apollo near the city, and Governor Atticus ordered everyone to take part. When it became known that Trophimus and Sabbatius refused to join the celebration, they were brought before the governor.

They would not deny Christ. After being beaten and tortured, Saint Trophimus was sent to Phrygia to face another cruel persecutor, while Saint Sabbatius remained before Atticus. When the governor asked Sabbatius about his rank and dignity, he answered: "My rank, my dignity, my homeland, my glory, and my wealth are Christ, the Son of God."

For this confession, he was tortured so terribly that he gave his soul to God. Saint Trophimus was also tortured and imprisoned. There, a senator named Dorymedon, who was secretly a Christian, came to serve him. When this was discovered, both men were tortured again and thrown before wild beasts.

The beasts would not touch them. Even when Saint Dorymedon tried to provoke a bear, the animal became gentle before him. Finally, Saints Trophimus and Dorymedon were killed by the sword.
