Saint Longinus: Centurion at the Cross who refused to deny the Resurrection

The post recounts the life of Saint Longinus, a Roman centurion stationed at Golgotha during the Crucifixion. Witnessing the earthquake and the events surrounding Christ's death, he confessed, "Truly this was the Son of God" (Matthew 27:54). Longinus also served among the guards at the tomb. When religious authorities bribed the soldiers to claim the disciples had stolen the body, he refused to participate in the lie.

Together with two fellow soldiers who had come to believe, he left military service, received baptism, and traveled to Cappadocia. There he devoted himself to fasting, prayer, and preaching the Gospel, converting many pagans through his testimony as an eyewitness of the Crucifixion and Resurrection. Pursued by enemies, Longinus learned through spiritual insight that soldiers had been sent to kill him.

Instead of fleeing, he welcomed them into his home, fed them, and spent the night in prayer. At dawn, he and his two companions dressed in white burial garments and revealed their identities. The soldiers hesitated, ashamed by his hospitality, but Longinus was prepared to die for Christ.

All three were martyred, receiving the crowns of glory. The account concludes with a request for the saint's intercession.
