Saint Demetrios: Noble Roman, Martyr, and Myrrh-Streamer
Saint Demetrios was born over 1,700 years ago into a noble family and held a high position in the Roman Empire. He loved Christ and spoke about him openly, leading many to believe. When the emperor visited his city, Demetrios was arrested and thrown into prison.
The emperor had a champion fighter who fought Christians in the arena. A young Christian sought Demetrios's blessing before facing him. Demetrios made the sign of the cross over the young man, who then defeated the giant like David and Goliath.
Centuries later, his stone began to pour out fragrant myrrh, which is why he is called the myrrh-streamer. His relics remain in Thessaloniki, and his feast on October 26 is celebrated as Mitrovdan in Serbia, one of the biggest days of the year.
