Church of Greece moves Feast of Holy Protection to Ohi Day

The feast of the Holy Protection of the Theotokos at Blachernae is traditionally observed on October 1. The Church of Greece transferred the celebration to October 28 to coincide with the national anniversary of the 1940 "Ohi," marking Greece's refusal to surrender to the Italo-German forces. The liturgical service for this combined observance was composed by the Athonite monk Gerasimos Mikragiannanites.

The Holy Synod of the Church of Greece approved the service and formally established the joint celebration on October 21, 1952. The decision is recorded in the Synodical Encyclicals, Volume B, Athens 1956, page 649.
