There are literally icons older than the idea of sola scriptura 🙌☦️
there were literal icons in the 2nd temple synagogue
really ? Icons are Divine, they aren't worshipped but venerated
Im struggling with the second one… we don't need an intercesor when we have Jesus
Well since the Saints in heaven are alive and still part of the body of Christ they can intercede for you, Saint Paul says intercession is for all and we ought to pray for one another. The Cloud of Witnesses simply ask Christ to have mercy on you on your behalf, God listens to holy people so their intercession helps us get closer to Christ
but wouldn't asking others to pray for you mean close friends/family? If they are alive in Christ, would it then be permissible to go to people who have died to ask for intercession? genuinely trying to understand here as I have a growing interest in orthodoxy but have been a lifelong Protestant/charismatic. How are verses like 1 Timothy 2:5, Hebrews 7:25, and Romans 8 interpreted in the orthodox view?
Mediator and intercessor are different. We intercede to be closer to Christ then He mediates between us and the Father.
well the reason we go specifically to the Saints is because the Church has recognized their faith and devotion to God so we know they are in heaven interceding for us, with other believers who died, they are likely in paradise awaiting the ressurection and final judgement. One second to look at the verses you mentioned
There's a difference between mediator and intercessor, Christ is the only mediator because he alone could re-unite humanity with God. The verses you mentioned likely are regarding God's work on the cross and his ability to save mankind. The intercession of the Saints is for believers to remain in God's grace
I came from a Pentecostal background as well. As Paul says "it's not I but Christ in me" and scripture also tells us "the prayers of a righteous man helped much". If we look at that in context to Christ saying to the Pharisees that someone may Die but will not see death He is referring to the saints. There is an afterlife to which the saints are participating in Gods glory and grace and why couldn't God allow them to continue to help us? The same way we believe our grandparents are looking down on us from heaven and watching us it's no different. God is love and the saints are alive. Trying to mess with other spirits for magic or other means is vastly different. The saints ask thy Gods will be done not ours.
Idk it's pretty cool asking Christs mom to pray for you when you're at work. I heard she asked Christ to turn water to wine on behalf of someone at a wedding and he did it…
I'm Orthodox. These comparisons don't work. We believe holy power dwells in an object, just like demons inversely occupy a ziggurat. Our prayers to the saints are spiritual communication.....we need nuance when preaching the faith.
are you arguing that icons have divine power?
yeah for sure, in a sense. They're not Uncreated, but they are endowed with the Uncreated Energies. They are divine like the angels are.
