The Orthodox Ascetic Path: From Mortifying the Passions to Theosis

A spiritual exhortation, written as the voice of an elder addressing a disciple, sets out the Orthodox ascetic path from the mortification of the passions to theosis. The elder warns against confusing outward austerity with true holiness: the desert of the body is not enough if the heart remains captive to pride and the passions.

Orthodox ascesis is described as perpetual metanoia, a purification of the nous and a progressive crucifixion of the old man. The means named are fasting, vigilance (nepsis), unceasing prayer and compunction, through which the soul learns to cooperate with divine grace, not to earn God, but to open itself to His presence. The text corrects two common misunderstandings. Apatheia is not insensitivity but liberation from the tyranny of the passions, and theosis is participation, by grace, in the uncreated energies of God.

The disciple is told to seek neither extraordinary visions nor spiritual glory, but deep humility, because any ascesis without charity risks becoming an illusion of pride. The closing counsel is to persevere in silence, repent without despairing, and pray without presumption. The final aim given is not self-glorification but letting Christ transfigure the whole of one's being. The post carries hashtags on Christianity, Orthodoxy, hesychasm, wisdom and theosis.
