Gerontas Filimon: patience waters the heart like a drizzle
Gerontas Filimon of the Holy Skete of Prophet Elias on Mount Athos teaches that when a person is in distress, the first response must be patience and the avoidance of tension. He compares God's mercy to a light drizzle that gently waters the heart, not a waterfall. The miracle belongs to God; our role is to strive to be a living example for the suffering person to imitate.
He cites Saint John Chrysostom, who said a Christian is like a rider on a horse whom everyone watches; observers see the example and recognize a Christian by it. Patience is required throughout all spiritual life, in relations with others, and in forgiveness; without it, nothing succeeds. Modern habits of speed and efficiency do not apply to spiritual matters, because God's grace works slowly.
