Catechumens and white belts: zeal without basics

The speaker compares new catechumens to white belts in jiu-jitsu. Both begin with zeal and excitement but try to do everything at once. The jiu-jitsu beginner watches short videos, buys instructionals, expensive gear, and ghee.

Similarly, catechumens buy many icons, build prayer corners three times larger than the speaker's, and acquire censers and other Orthodox memorabilia. They do not actually use these items properly or know how to use them. They do not yet know the basics of the faith. The speaker tells them they need to practice and learn the basics: learning the faith, learning how to pray, fasting, and going to church.
